Kitten Sonnet
My kitten chases a mouse in a slow crawl
Looking intently under the light
He jumps up next to the wall
Scared form the growing darkness of the night
I watch from the couch trying not to fall asleep
Keeping an eye on my kitten chasing its prey
Next to his brother, he begins to creep
Wanting for him to join and play
His brother join and they get ready
as they jump to catch their snack
I make an accidental movement, and the become unsteady
and I watch as they look back
The mouse runs away as they come back to me
my kittens sitting together in harmony.

The Beauty of War
War at night
Has a special beauty,
There is nothing anywhere,
That can quite compare.
Perimeter flares slice/arc the black,
Then bob and slowly weave to earth
Causing shadows to dance and weave
And stretch your world's reality.
Spectacular firefights
As streaming red fifties tattoo,
Clashing with sporadic VC green,
Harmonizes with 81mm quick-flashes.
Distant artillery white blinks
Splits the nearby tree line shadows,
As it cracking thunder
Streaks screaming through the sky.
High on his sky-throne
Spooky pisses his tracers in a gentle flow,
Moaned from multi barreled Gattling guns
That disappear and melt into the blackness below.
Nape at night is out of sight!
It splashes in yellowish, red syrupy splash,
That laboriously floats up, out then down
Smothering the earth and licking it clean.
Bombs are quick and ruthless,
Fast silver-white flashes in the black,
But cutting iron, not flash, kills,
And their mission is grim.
Rockets flash like zipping gangbusters,
Streaking a fiery sparkling tail
That skims into the black void to disappear,
Then resurrect again in detonation.
The sounds of war are different from others,
Not too unpleasant, but distinct,
The eternal crackle and chatter of radios,
Filling the air like white, background noise.
The sights and sounds of war at night,
Are unseen and impersonal,
Without authorship or responsibility,
Somehow removed, to be viewed from afar.
One unpleasant reality of war
Is the smell, the cordite burn,
The acrid sweet smell of sweet pork,
From burning, human meat.
Somehow that and the screams
Of the unseen dying somewhere
Out there, tends to diminish
The beauty and fun of it all.

My Analysis
"The Beauty of War" by Curt Bennett (found on Poems of Vietnam War) is a poem that describes how the war is very ugly. The story in the poem takes place in Vietnam where a man fighting in the war is trying to find beauty in an ugly war. He looks and looks but every time he finds something even remotely nice there is plenty more negative things that cover up the good. He sees bombs flying through the air and people being killed. He learns how dark the war really is. He also sees rockets and flares soaring through the sky and he thinks of how scared everyone must be. The author, Curt Bennett, conveys his message about the war by showing the readers how the good out-weighs the bad things in war.

Langston Hughes (poet)
Hughes lived in and grew up in Lawrence, Kansas with his grandmother. He was a young African American boy in a time of segregation. His parents discouraged his poetic aspirations but Hughes never gave up on his poetry. His grandmother would tell him stories at night with now tied into his poems. His earlier poems explored the dignity of African Americans.
My chosen poem of Langston Hughes is "Harlem"
This poem describes one of Hughes's dreams where he thinks of what it would be like to not be able to pursue your dreams. He thinks of what tragedies would occur if no one could pursue their dreams.
My Inspired Poem
Stories I was told long ago
when I couldn't sleep
They would tell me stories about the past
looking at me with sadness in their eyes
Stories about when they were young
Looking back thinking about their struggle
They survived but are scarred for life
with the sadness in their hearts
-Inspired by Langston Hughes
