The hearing went good and no one got seperated or sent to jail. Pony and Darry are alwaysu fighting which upsets Soda. One night Soda runs away while Pony and Darry are fighting. The boys all agree that they have to stick together as one family. After, pony can get started on his theme, but he picks up "Gone with the Wind" and finds a note from Johnny. This inspires him to write his theme.
"We are all we got." - This quote shows how close the brothers are and how much they care about each other. It wraps up the story very well.

Ponyboy is still in bed resting from his injuries that he got at the rumble. He sees a boy in the yearbook that looked familier and he realizes that it is Bob. Randy comes to visit and he tells pony that eveyrone involed that night is going to court. Randy also tells him that he is going to tell the truth even if it upsets his father and complains about how hard it's been for him. This angers Pony because he thinks of all his issues and worries and here's a rich soc who can buy his way out of anything complaining.
"Johnny isn't dead!" -This quote shows what shock and pain Pony still is in about losing his best friend. He has convinced himself that Johnny isn't dead. After Johnny dies Pony he distraught. He walks throughout the night until a stanger asks him if he wants a ride. Pony is bleeding and dizzy from the rumble. Dally is on the run from the fuzz when they shoot him under a street light because he pulled a gun on them (it was unloaded). He did this because he could not live witht the death of Johnny. Pony goes on to sleep for three days and wakes up to find out that he has had a concussion which is why he has been so tired and out of it for the past days.
"Johnny was the one person Dally loved" - This quote shows how even though Dally seemed to not like anyone he really did love Johnny and he couldn't handle life without him. This chapter is very deep and has major affects on the attitude of the story. They go to visit Johnny one last time. Johnny passes away with pony at his side saying, "Stay gold, Pony, Stay Gold." The greasers win the rumble, for Johnny.
"Stay gold Pony, stay Gold." - This quote is significant because it shows the hope Johnny has for Pony and how he believes in Pony. He wants something better for Pony. Everyone goes back to visit johnny. Johnny asks Pony to finish reading him "Gone With the Wind" which is the book they read in the church. Johnny is still in critical condition. The rumble will be fists only so that means no weapon/no danger. Pony then gets mad and blames Cherry for everything that is going on but then takes it back because he feels bad.
"We couldn’t get along without him. We needed Johnny as much as he needed the gang. And for the same reason." - This quote is significant because it shows how important Johnny is to the gang and how he was the one that made everyone get along and without him they would fall apart. The boys are in the hospital with severe burns. The boys are then met by reporters where they are told they are heroes. Soda entertains the room by messing around with the police. They discover they might be split up, but Pony, Soda, and Darry are willing to do anything to stay together. They talk about the rumble that is soon to come between the greasers and socs.
"Greasers will be greasers." -This quote is important because it shows how close the greasers are and how they never want to change who they are. The chapter starts with Dally at Dairy Queen. Johnny tells Dally that that when they get back to town, they are going to turn themselves in. They ride up to the church only to find out that its on fire. When Johnny and Pony here children yelling inside the go in. They save the children, but Johnny and Pony are rushed to the hospital with severe burns. He is happy to see Soda but he is sad to see Darry crying because Darry never cries not even at their parents funeral, he realizes that Darry still loves him.
"Darry, I'm sorry" - This shows that Pony feels bad for running away and worrying his brothers. When Ponyboy wakes up he almost jumps. He looks for Johnny but sees a note saying he went to get supplies. He pretends he is back home with darry and Soda. Dally says its ok for them to come home. They go to Dairy Queen and talk about how tensions have risen between the socs and the greasers.
"Your in the wrong territory. You better watch it" - This quote is important because it shows how the greasers and socs hate each other so much they don't even want to be near each other. When Johnny and pony were walking in the park at night alone, a couple of drunk socs come up from behind them. They grab Pony and begin drowning him in the fountain. When Pony was about to be dead, Johnny stabs Bob, killing him. When Pony regains consciousness he sees Bob lying on the ground dead. Pony starts freaking out because Johnny just murdered someone. They decide to run to Dally because they knew he would be able to help them.
"I had to. They were drowning you Pony." -This quote is significant because it is Johnny trying to defend his actions. He is saying how he had to kill Bob in order to save his friend. In this chapter, Pony and Johnny were almost jumped again while they were talking to Cherry. Cherry's boyfriend gets worried that the greasers are going to 'steal' her from him. However, Cherry manages to stop him from hurting the boys. Although this was a nice gesture, it angers Johnny because he feels like the greasers are always getting bossed around by the socs. Ponyboy gets home late and it is past his curfew. He gets into an argument with Darry and Darry accidently slaps Pony out of anger. Pony immediately runs away with Darry yelling at him saying he's sorry and that he didn't mean to hurt him.
"Things gotta get better, I figured. They couldn't get worse. I was wrong" - This quote is saying how Pony thought that his life couldn't possibly get any worse but when it does, Pony still is shocked. |
