One night, when all the boys went to a drive-in movie, Pony and Johnny decide to talk to the two soc girls sitting in front of them. They talk about the differences in their 'social groups'. The girls try to defend their group by saying how they have many things to worry about too, but Pony and Johnny don't really find that to be very true. They decide in the end that they can't hang out together, though, because they are from different social groups and that society won't allow them to be friends.
"Even if they did have their own troubles. I really couldn't see what Socs would hve to sweat about." - I find this quote to be important to the chapter because it shows how the greasers have much more to deal with than the socs do but the socs seem to think they have it rough too. I shows the conflict between the two groups.

In chapter one we meet the main character, Ponyboy. Ponyboy gets attacked socs when he is walking home from the movies. His brothers, Darry and Sodapop come and rescue him. Ponyboy describes his brothers is very vivid detail. He says how Sodapop is very good looking and how he is very understanding. However, his oldest brother Darry, is very controlling and doesn't seem to like ponyboy very much. We also learn that Ponyboy's parents were both killed in a car accident.
"Since Mom and Dad were killed in an auto wreck, the three of us only get to stay together only as long as we behave. So Soda and I stay out of trouble as much as we can" - I think this quote is significant because it descibes the hardships that Pony and his brothers are faced with and the terrible loss of their parents. "Teenagers struggle to make good decisions."
I agree with this statement because many teens are peer-pressured into making wrond decisions or they do things because they think it is the "common" thing to do. Teens also are under a lot of stress to do good in school and get into college which can play a role in their clear mindset which helps them make those good decisions. Everybody makes mistakes growing up and that's just a part of life. |
